The credit industry has been staunchly defending itself against taking responsibility for information leaks. Academic research has shown that a good credit rating industry roughly doubles economic activity, so the credit industry must be given some credit for doing good. But to me it seems that the industry won't do the right thing until responsibility and data protection are linked together. If the industry was responsible for their leaks I imagine all credit transactions and data storage would be encrypted by now...
